The world premiere of the operetta Silvia composed by EMMERICH KÁLMÁN, with a libretto by LEO STEIN and BELA JENBACH, had its world premiere on November 17, 1915, at the Johann Strauss Theater in Vienna, and in 1917 it was performed for the first time on Broadway, at the New Amsterdam Theater, New York, under the title Riviera Girl, with the libretto written by GUY BOLTON and P.G. WOODHOUSE. In 1919, the operetta was staged for the first time in Romania, at the Modern Theater, with Virginia Demetrescu de Sylva in the leading role.
The operetta SILVIA, whose initial title was LONG LIVE LOVE!, follows the love story between Silvia Varescu, a star of the Orfeu cabaret in Budapest, and Edwin de Lippert-Weylersheim, an officer and heir to an old Viennese aristocratic family. Their relationship clashes with the social rules of the era, which impose an arranged marriage on Edwin with Countess Stazi.
Between broken promises, compromising documents, family interventions and the situational humor generated by the comic duo Boni and Feri, the libretto develops a predictable, but effective, conflict between individual freedom and social convention. The final reconciliation, specific to the operetta universe, means accepting love at the moment it no longer contradicts the existing order. A story with a happy ending that mirrors the incomparable charm of the Belle Epoque, a cocktail of vitality woven from old and new love stories, an extremely engaging show, whose musical numbers have become hits.
