Teatrul National de Opereta si Musical Ion Dacian, Bucuresti
The "Ion Dacian" National Operetta and Musical Theatre brings to the stage a very special musical title: "Kiss me, Kate!" to the music of the famous Cole Porter and the libretto by Sam and Bella Spewack.
The interest in musical is not at all recent in the Operetta Theater. The famous tenor Ion Dacian, whose name is proudly carried by this theater, staged "My Fair Lady" by Frederick Loewe, shortly after the world premiere. Then, in the 70s, the musical "Oklahoma" by Richard Rodgers was put on stage. Later followed "Hello, Dolly!" by Jerry Herman, two different productions of "West Side Story" by Leonard Bernstein, and in recent years the box office success was ensured, among others, by the famous staging of "Romeo and Juliet" by Gérard Presgurvic, "Rebecca" by Sylvester Levay, or the title that broke all records in the whole world, "The Phantom of the Opera" by the well-known Andrew Lloyd Webber.
The case of ”Kiss me, Kate!” is a very special one. This title is among the few titles that have had enormous success, from the world premiere in 1948, to the present day, in America and in different corners of the world. But it is not success that is the defining element of this title, but rather the fame of being part of those classic works of the genre, which hold the ”golden rule”, without which the musical comedy, or ”musical”, as it is briefly called, could not exist. This ”golden rule” was established with the emergence of a title which, paradoxically, is much closer to the operetta genre. It is about ”Show Boat” by Jerome Kern, which, moreover, underlines the birth and finalization of this type of show. Following what composers from earlier times sought to obtain (Christoph Willibard Gluck, Claudio Monteverdi, Richard Wagner), namely a total syncretism of all the arts that make up the stage show, the musical contains seemingly easy music, grafted onto the influences of Afro-Amero-Indian music, especially jazz, often strongly rhythmic. It is the line that marks love duets of a rare sweetness and languid romanticism, or devilish dances that hardly allow the audience not to jump out of their armchairs. The element of comedy is permanently present through the comedic situations of the actors, conducted with the precision of a Swiss watch. The stage image is, as in the operetta, one of opulence and special luxury, meant to relax and lead the spectator away from everyday worries. It was even said that the musical was born as a ”recipe” to save the American people from the crisis of the ”20s.
”Kiss me, Kate” respects this ”golden rule” with absolute strictness. The engaging musical numbers alternate with acting scenes in which the artists can demonstrate their stage talent. There is an abundance of dances that culminate in a dance ensemble in the second act. The situational comedy is present, even if in a more refined form, from beginning to end. Therefore, humor is not only present in some characters, but is shared by all, so that the ”gags” flow like a waterfall. Comedy always has tragedy as its opposite. That is why tense scenes are never missing. And as a balance, romance makes its presence and resolves everything. The first part is always longer than the second part. The show ends with an almost invariably ”happy end”. From beginning to end, everything flows with such high energy and tension that the spectator doesn't even feel when the show ends. Verve and good mood are at home.
The notoriety of this title is underlined by the fact that in January 2019, a new production saw the light of the stage at the Opera in Gratz, Austria. And in the spring of the same year, a revival took place on Broadway, having the famous Kelli O”Hara as the protagonist in the main role.
The uniqueness of the libretto lies in the amazing parallel between a celebrity couple and the roles they play in the Shakespearean comedy "The Taming of the Shrew" or as it is also known "The Shrewish Woman". Revealing life behind the curtain, with the effervescent preparations for staging a show, putting in the foreground the acid exchange of words between the two recently divorced protagonists – Fred and Lilly – but also comic situations in which they are placed, the scenes taken from the master of Streadford on Avon's comedy do nothing but show that his characters are almost identical in behavior and attitudes and, above all, that they go through similar situations.
"Kiss me, Kate!" is one of the most difficult titles in the genre literature. The stage performance is required at the highest levels, both in dance, in singing and in acting. It is also required of both soloists and ensembles. That is why the scores are very complex and they must be treated with the utmost seriousness. Physical training is not one of the last elements of this preparation. The collectives of our theater have this training and the huge desire to surpass themselves. The satisfaction is, however, commensurate. At this show you can work with dedication and a lot of pleasure.
Here's why choosing this title was a challenge for all of us. I sincerely hope that the test of meeting the audience will be passed with flying colors, by each one individually and by all of us together.
