Passion, freedom, and destiny: Bizet's "Carmen" returns to the Constanta stage
The National Opera and Ballet Theatre „Oleg Danovski” Constanța continues the 2026–2027 season with one of the most famous and beloved operas in the universal repertoire: „Carmen” by Georges Bizet.
The performance will take place on Sunday, December 13, 2026, at 18:30, on the stage of the Constanța Trade Union House of Culture, in a performance that highlights the passion, freedom, and strength of a destiny impossible to control.
„Carmen” is one of the creations that definitively changed the history of opera. The music of Georges Bizet captures with remarkable expressiveness the temperament of the characters, the vibrant atmosphere of Seville, and the tension of a love story in which freedom is more important than any convention.
În centrul acțiunii se află Carmen, an independent and seductive woman who refuses to accept limits imposed by society or those around her. Her relationship with Don José evolves from attraction and passion to jealousy, conflict, and tragedy, in a dramatic journey where each choice brings the characters closer to an inevitable outcome.
Bizet's score is recognized for its iconic arias, duets, and ensembles, as well as for its orchestral color and rhythms inspired by the Spanish atmosphere. From the famous „Habanera” to the „Toreador Song”, „Carmen” brings together some of the most famous pieces in the operatic repertoire.
At the conductor's podium will be Tiberiu Dragoș Oprea, who will lead the Orchestra and Choir of the National Opera and Ballet Theatre „Oleg Danovski” Constanța. The cast brings together acclaimed lyrical artists, in a formation that highlights the dramatic intensity and musical beauty of Bizet's masterpiece: Lucia Mihalache, Doru Iftene, Georgiana Medeleanu, Daniel Pop, Eugen Florea, Mădălin Băldău, Mihai Teodoru and Marius Eftimie.
Through the power of the voices and the scenic expressiveness of the performers, the show offers the audience an immersion into a world dominated by passion, freedom, and soul conflicts, where characters are forced to confront their own choices.
"Carmen" remains, more than a century after its premiere, an opera of surprising relevance: a story about the freedom to love, about the refusal to be possessed, and about the consequences of passion taken to the extreme.
We invite you on Sunday, December 13th, at 6:30 PM, at the Constanța Trade Union House of Culture, for an evening where Bizet's music will transform passion, freedom, and destiny into an unforgettable scenic experience.
