MAITREYI
«Maitreyi» (1933) by Mircea Eliade is a love novel, inspired by a real story lived by the author in India, between 1929-1931.
The book features Allan as the main character, an English engineer (but in fact Eliade's alter ego), who arrives in Kolkata (Calcutta) to work. Here he meets Maitreyi Devi, the daughter of the Indian engineer Narendra Sen — a 16-year-old girl, of a special beauty, with a melancholic look, much sensitivity, intelligence and a poetic nature.
A show with consecrated and well-known actors to the general public, now comes with authentic feelings and pure feelings, to stage the conflict between reason and feeling. The impossible love story between Maitreiy and Allan, is about the West and the East, about defying social conventions through total love. A love that appears from nowhere, is composed and then suddenly and abusively decomposes due to society, family and cultural differences, leaving behind years of unspoken and unfulfilled words and feelings. Is it good? Is it bad? We don't know! But it certainly remains incomprehensible for our days.
