Bucovina Carol! Extraordinary concert of carols and winter customs
Dalles Hall Bucharest
December 19, 2025 at 19:00
On the eve of Christmas, give yourself a special gift! Come to the extraordinary concert of carols and winter customs at Dalles Hall, to enjoy the total spectacle of Bucovina traditions, which brings on the same stage the emotion and authentic spirit of the holidays through the united voices of three exceptional ensembles. We invite you on a journey into the heart of Bucovina, where Christmas means charm, peace and meaning, and caroling customs create bridges between people.
In our concert, entitled "Colindă Bucovina" (Bucovina Carol), the hosts from Mălini, the folk group Gura Izvorului from Vatra Moldoviței and the carolers of the Arcanul Ensemble of the "Ștefan cel Mare" University of Suceava, under the direction of Starost Călin Brăteanu, join hands. The evening will resound with the symbolic joy of carols, which will take you to a place of humanity, gratitude and communion, offering you moments of experience detached from the poetry of winter customs from the Upper Land of Moldavia. Pure emotion, from a pure world of the Romanian people's soul.
An ancient cradle of Romanian history and culture, Suceava County is also the keeper of inexhaustible treasures of beauty, created with sensitivity and mastery by the inhabitants of these lands. The area of songs, games and popular customs is linked to moments from the cycle of human life, as well as the holidays throughout the year.
Caroling with masks, specific to the Țara de Sus of Moldavia at the time of the transition between years, combines faith, joy and the archaic symbols of the Romanian village. In Bucovina, caroling begins on Christmas Eve and can continue until Epiphany. Children are the first to start with the carols, from lunch, announcing the Nativity of the Lord from house to house. The evening belongs to the young people who carol where the beautiful girl is. At Straja, those who carol are the girls, and the village heads start after midnight, sometimes continuing until Epiphany. In the night between years, the villages of Bucovina are animated by the groups of carolers called "Malanca", "Ceata", "Capra", "Irozii", "Banda lui Coroi" or "Banda lui Bujor".
An entire symbolism, reflected in the game of the members of the groups, comes to delight the communities. Thus, goats, bears, herods, little horses, old men, devils, bunghers, bear trainers, captains are parts of a cultural tableau which, year after year, keeps alive the tradition related to the revival of time, the wish for a better year for the one knocking at the door.
Participates:
Staroste Călin Brăteanu
The "Gura lzvoreului" Ensemble from Vatra Moldoviței
The "Obcina Stânişoarei" Ensemble from Mălini
The "Arecanu" Ensemble of the Ştefan cel Mare University from Suceava
Show duration: 90 minutes
A project of the Lyra Kripto Association (formerly Kitarodia) in partnership with the "Ioan I. Dalles" Metropolitan Center for Education and Culture.
